BOTOX- My Experience

Hi Angels! You’re probably here because you read the title, and have some interest in Botox. Let’s be upfront here. Today I am talking about a controversial subject matter. Even though I am an “Influencer”, I am in no way, shape or form trying to tell you that you need Botox.

Getting Botox is a personal decision, and you should always learn the facts before booking an appointment. I am simply writing this post to share my experience with Botox and Charleston Medical Spa. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions on the cosmetic procedure. Please be respectful.

This post will mainly focus on my experience with getting Botox at Charleston Medical Spa, but I wanted to answer some of your most asked questions.

What is Botox?

There is a more scientific explanation for Botox, but I am not going to confuse you with that mumbo jumbo. Simply put, Botox is a protein. It blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles. This makes the injected muscle unable to contract/ freezes that area. Botox makes wrinkles appear more relaxed and softer. By doing this, it prevents existing wrinkles from getting worse, and new ones from forming over time. To prevent new ones from forming, you need to continue to get Botox somewhat regularly.

Like with any product, there are always potential side effects. Make sure you read up on those, and learn how to prep yourself before your appointment.

Botox Does NOT Get rid of Wrinkles

Botox only lasts anywhere from 3-6 months. It is not a permanent injection. Botox is not the same as fillers. Botox does not fill in existing wrinkles. It makes current ones appear softer, while freezing the injected area to prevent new ones. Also, Botox results are not immediate. It takes 7 days for the results to show and the muscles to freeze.

Does Botox Hurt?

It pinches like any needle would, but the needle is soo teeny tiny it doesn’t hurt per say. I have a very low pain tolerance. If I can make it through, then you will be fine haha. Some places offer a numbing cream, but that honestly is not necessary for Botox.

Is Botox Expensive?

Botox is an investment. I am poor lol, so I do not get it often. I find getting it twice a year works best for me, if I can afford to do so. I only get Botox in my forehead and frown line between my eyes. I use anywhere from 20-35 units.

Botox typically runs anywhere from $11-14 per a unit. A lot of places that provide Botox will do random sales throughout the year. That is when I go!

You can also get Xeomin, which is the generic form of Botox. Xeomin is always more affordable, and usually $9-12 per unit. I have done Xeomin twice and did not notice a real difference between that and Botox.

Depending on how mature your skin is, then that’s where it can add up. I only get what is considered to be small doses. It is usually $200-350. Note: everyone is different!

Charleston Medical Spa

I have gotten Botox/ Xeomin 3 times in the past, but that was before I moved to Charleston. After going a year and a half without it, I knew before my 30th birthday it was something I needed to do again. Being new to Charleston, I was unsure of where to go. After doing some research, I came across Charleston Medical Spa and all their raving reviews!

Charleston Medical Spa is an award winning medical spa offering the most advanced treatments to help you look and feel your best. They offer complimentary consultations too!

I was fortunate enough to be able to collaborate with them for my first Botox experience in Charleston. While I did receive a discounted rate for this collaboration, all reviews and opinions are my own.

Charleston Medical Spa is located off Maybank Highway on James Island. They are located in a plaza, and have a parking lot. I will make it known that parking is always very stressful and busy there.

I had the pleasure of being seen by Sarah Helfrich, NP-C. Sarah is truly amazing and super knowledgeable. She helped me answer some of your questions, which we shared on Instagram Stories.

Sarah listened to me and helped me make the best decision on what inject-able to choose.

The entire process went by pretty quickly. We marked the spots that needed treatment, and before I knew it I was almost done being injected.

I went back two weeks later for my follow up. We added a little more Botox, which is completely normal to do.

I am extremely happy with my results and care at Charleston Medical Spa. I cannot say enough great things about the staff as a whole. They even have clients that come from out of state, which truly speaks volumes.

Empowered From Within- barre3

Hi Smile Darlings! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I recently started my fitness journey. I took a year off from the gym because my heart rate was so high. When I would workout, I would almost faint. After finally being diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and an autoimmune disease in November, having answers meant I could get better. With my heart rate back to “normal”, I knew it was time to get both my mind and body back on track.

Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with Barre3 in Charleston. This post contains my honest thoughts and all opinions are my own. Please note: This post will be more specific toward the Charleston location. Let’s jump in!

What is Barre3?

Barre3 is a full-body balanced workout combining strength conditioning, cardio, and mindfulness.

How is Barre3 Different?

I have tried a couple barre studios in the past. Four years ago, I was a member at Pure Barre (which was short lived cuz $$$). I used to religiously do barre at the YMCA multiple times a week. I have done free classes at Fly Wheel, Hylo (their hot barre is awesome), and Air Fit Charlotte just to name a few. I love barre! All these studios have commonalities and similar techniques.

For me, the thing that stood out most about Barre3 is that the transformative power of the workout is far more than just physical. They put a strong emphasis on empowerment and self love. They do not pressure you to feel as though you must “look the part” or “be fit” in order to go there. They instill in their clients that “Every Body Is A Perfect Body”.

I know, I know… That may sound so cliché, especially in a culture that is force feeding us all this “body positivity” and “self-love” mumbo jumbo. BUT, I swear! Their method and words are powerful. They keep me accountable. They make me feel motivated to carry that strength with me through the rest of the day. After doing such an intense class, I lay there on the floor with my lavender towel covering my face almost in tears. I feel proud. I feel humbled that my body got me through that workout. All those self-conscious feelings melt away in those moments. I get to escape my mind that has been nothing but truly toxic when it comes to body image. After a Barre3 class, I feel at peace.

Where is Barre3 Located?

The Barre3 Charleston location is in the historic district of downtown. It is located above West Elm on the NW corner of Upper King Street and Mary Street.

If you do not live in Charleston, no worries! They have soo many other locations! Click here to find a location near you.

While we are on the subject of location, because it is downtown they do not have a parking lot. If you cannot find street parking (or parallel park like me), there is the Visitor’s Garage on Mary St. It ends up being $3-4 to park during your class. I know it isn’t ideal to pay for parking, but it isn’t expensive. I bring up the parking situation, because for my first class I did not know what to expect. Trying to find street parking gave me such bad anxiety, I almost cancelled the class lol.

How Much Does it Cost?

If you know me, I am honest. These kinds of studios are what I like to call “boutique gyms”. For me, that is a fancy way of saying they are expensive.

With that being said, at Barre3 you definitely get what you pay for. Their classes do not disappoint. The Charleston location provides a couple opportunities for you to get some awesome discounted rates. Also, if you go to college in Charleston, then you’re going to want to keep reading!

Their intro specials include 3 classes for $40, and 2 weeks unlimited for $59.

They offer college discounts on class packages and memberships. If you’re in college and plan to go 3 times a week, then the unlimited is definitely recommend. It breaks down to about $8.25 a class (me pondering if I still have an old college ID to use for this discount, haha). College students also get a discount on class packs.

The Charleston location does a sale twice a year on 10 class packs! The sale is in April (so soon!), and November.

Members get discounts on retail and all memberships including Barre3 online.

Do I Recommend?

I am not going to sit here and act like barre and other gyms like this are the most affordable. They are not. They are an investment, and I am aware not everyone (including myself) has the budget for it. With that being said, I do 100% recommend Barre3!

If you are unable to afford a monthly membership, I love the idea of buying visits. I would by X amount of visits and use them alongside another more affordable gym. I get the basic membership at Planet Fitness, and then I save and buy classes in bundles. I take a few classes a month. I have found that to be more cost effective when you’re on a tight budget, but still want to attend a more “boutique” workout gym.

I truly love and support Barre3 and their mission. They are trying to change they way people workout and view their bodies. They want to eliminate the “before and after” image we have formed in our minds, and focus on the present. If you have a studio near you, I highly recommend giving a class a try!

If you live in Charleston (or anywhere really), I definitely recommend you try a Barre3 class! These classes will challenge you physically and mentally, but it is all worth it!

Tula- Is It Worth It?

You are probably here because you are debating whether or not to invest in Tula Skincare. You’re probably wondering, “is it worth the hype”? You are probably thinking, “is it worth the price”?

I get questions almost daily requesting my opinion on the brand Tula. Today, I am here to give you my most honest review on all the products I have tried. Some products I am obsessed with! Others, I can do without.

Let’s start with the basics.

What is Tula? Simply put, Tula is Probiotic Skincare. That’s right, the same bacteria that are best known to help balance and calm your stomach are also clinically proven to help promote the look of hydrated skin and calm inflammation. Tula’s products are made with clean, clinically-proven, high-quality ingredients that nourish your skin. Tula is 100% free from phthalates, parabens, propylene glycol, petrolatum, gluten, and mineral oil. They are also certified cruelty free!

I have been using Tula for two and a half years! When I first started using Tula, I did not have a magical experience. It actually made me breakout the first three weeks. When that happened, I was second guessing the hype. After sticking it out a full 6 weeks, my skin COMPLETELY CLEARED! My skin has stayed consistently clear ever since! I am so glad I stuck it out! I have tried around 10 different products from Tula. Below is a review on the products I currently use and have tried.

Purifying Cleanser

This face wash is considered a cult classic for a reason! It is a gel cleanser that goes deep into your pores to remove dirt and other impurities. I swear by this stuff! I have three bottles as back up because I use this product daily and I never want to run out! This cleanser changed my skin. While it does give your skin a good clean, I have never felt that my skin was left feeling stripped or overly dry. In the winter months, it does leave a tight feeling occasionally. Out of all the Tula products, this will alwaysss be the first one I recommend. YOU NEED IT!

The bottle size is pretty generous. With it being a high end skincare line, I would say the price for this is pretty good! For a 6.7 FL oz bottle, it will cost you around $28. Pro-Glycolic Resurfacing Gel Toner

This toner is alcohol-free. It uses probiotics, glycolic acid, and beetroot extract to gently exfoliate the skin. When I first started using this toner, I was in love! It was like magic. I even got my sister hooked. I liked the gel consistency as opposed to a liquid.

After my first bottle, the obsession wore off. I do think this is a really good toner, don’t get me wrong. However, I currently loveee the toner I have been using by a different brand that is a fraction of the price. This toner is $34 and the one I use is $8. I have purchased toners that are considered more expensive at around the $28-$32 mark. I personally do not have a problem with paying more for a good product, but I don’t know if I would pay that for this. I actually wouldn’t.

This toner does have almost 500 5 star reviews, so if you want to try it, go for it! It comes in a travel size. For my girls who are cost conscious, I do not think it is a product that is a must!

Acne Clearing Gel

This gel is supposed to clear skin and assist with fighting to prevent breakouts. Salicylic acid helps fight and prevent acne, superfood willowherb helps hydrate & soothe the skin, azelaic acid brightens the look of marks left by past blemishes. I bought this product because I was breaking out consistently on my jawline due to my Thyroid disorder. For me, this product did not work. I also did not use it as directed, which was twice daily. I do not have constant breakouts anymore, so maybe I am not a direct candidate. Others have had a higher success rate.

The gel does dry quickly and you can apply moisturizer and makeup on top of it. Overall, I would pass on this product. If you are struggling with acne though, what have you got to lose?

Oil Free Gel Cream

This moisturizer is a gel cream that leaves skin quenched, dewy and revived in a weightless, oil-free texture. I am obsessed with this stuff! I love using it on days that I skip wearing make-up. I also love it for summer time! It absorbs quickly and leaves my skin glowing. I highly recommend trying it! It is great for dry skin and skin prone to breakouts.

Price point wise, I think it’s overpriced. For 1.7 FL oz, $48 is pricey in my opinion. I think it is worth trying, but it is not something I would buy on the reg. I only use this a few times a week, so the product does last longer. Use my code: SMILEDARLING for 15% off!

Hydrating Day & Night Cream

I cannot say enough good things about this product! It is by far the best face moisturizer I have tried to date! I have been using it for over two years, and have no immediate plans to change. This product delivers deep hydration to help revive dull skin, and reveals an even, glowing, youthful-looking complexion. This moisturizer is great for anytime of year.

This product is a little expensive ($52), but it is absolutely worth it! I highly recommend this face cream! It also comes in a travel friendly container.

Exfoliating Treatment Mask

This clay-based mask gently exfoliates and detoxes, leaving skin noticeably smoother. Antioxidant-rich blueberry extract hydrates and promotes even skin tone. For me, this product is a no-go. I was not a huge fan. It made me breakout after every use.

Others have seen really great results and swear by it, but ehh not me. My skin is sensitive to exfoliating scrubs. While it did brighten my skin, a lot of other products do that as well.

For 1.7 FL oz, the price is fair ($48). Most of the other clay face masks I use are around the same price.

Face Filter Blurring Primer

On the days that I don’t feel like wearing makeup (which have become often), I love using this primer to smooth everything out. This product is formulated in a way that will not clog pores. This primer instantly smooths the look of uneven skin tone & redness for a “filter” like finish. Probiotics & superfoods like licorice & chia seeds help balance & nourish skin. As you blend this buildable formula, it releases its special skin-blurring properties or “glow particles” that create the look of sun-kissed skin. Meaning, this primer produces a slight color. If you do not rub it in well, you will see the color difference by your hairline.

This product is always “sold out” for a reason! I really do like it! I don’t use it the typical way you would use a primer though. I don’t usually put make-up over it.

This primer costs around $34, which is standard for most primers you would find at Sephora or Ulta. I definitely recommend!

Multi-Spectrum Eye Serum

This eye serum is clinically proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and puffiness. It is a caffeine-packed serum, to help make tired eyes look more refreshed! This serum rubs in really well and does not leave any sticky residue. Within a few uses, my eyes started to look younger. But maybe I just wanted to believe that. Concealer blends just fine over this product!

I really do like this product and highly recommend! But, you guessed it! I think it is a bit expensive. The formula falls in-line with its’ competitors, making it a standard price point. I am personally not ready to pay that consistently for an eye cream, but when I am I’ll go back to this!

Brightening Eye Balm Stick

Yes! Just yes! This product is a must! This product comes in two formulas. The Blue Stick is a luminous eye balm that delivers a lit-from-within glow while instantly hydrating, cooling, and filling in fine lines around the eyes. You’ll feel awake and look energized so you can glow & get it!

The Rose Stick has even more glow-enhancing ingredients. Made with the same probiotics + superfoods in the original Eye Balm, plus the addition of rosehip oil & hydrating rosewater so you feel instantly energized, awake & ready to glow.

The Blue Stick delivers more of a “cooling” sensation, where as the Rose Stick has more highlighting pigment and shimmer. I prefer the Blue over the Rose, solely because I enjoy the more intense “cooling” sensation. The Rose sometimes leaves too much highlighter under my eyes. The Rose also can dry weird sometimes. The highlight leaves a white residue if not patted in.

All in all, I highly recommend this! It lasts sooo long and is worth the price.

New Year, New Perspective 2020

Hi babes! A new decade is literally a day away! Like, what?!

Like most people, this has caused me to really take a step back and reflect. Not only did I stop to remember the last 10 years of my life, I have also really focused on this past year as well.

The year 2019 was full of realization. For me, it was the year of the learning curve. Not only does this pertain to my blog, but also in my personal life.


Let’s just dive right in and start off with something deep.

In 2019 I took the plunge (again), and randomly moved to Charleston with my sister. This move has not been what I had imagined. I have been struggling. I have finally realized that just simply moving to a new state, and creating a new life doesn’t necessarily make things different. It won’t always make you feel happy. What does happiness even mean to me? I have pondered this a lot over the last few months. The answer isn’t always simple. I have found though that happiness must first come from within. 

Transitioning off that, this past year has really given me clarity on my mental health. My anxiety. My Depression. The steps I needed to take. And while I am still in the beginning stages of this process, I’m really looking forward to 2020 and the progress I know I will make.

This past year I learned about boundaries. I have learned to stand up for myself. I have a voice and my feelings are valid regardless of how others may perceive them. I will continue to carry this voice with me not only through 2020, but for life.

Twenty Nineteen showed me the true meaning of friendship. I have realized the quality of people I have in my life immensely outweighs the quantity. Since moving to Charleston, I have been more selective when it comes to making friends. I was down on myself for a while because I found it challenging to make friends here. It was honestly making me depressed. I now see it in a new light though. I see I was just changing and growing as a person. I have learned if I don’t click with people, it’s okay. I don’t need to force friendships whether old or new. I have found what I value. I have learned to move forward.

This year, I figured out who I really was. I took time to explore different facets of my life. I decided to be more open with myself. My new motto for 2020 is ” Be You. Do You. For You”.

In 2019, I finally got answers on my health! Yay! We finally solved the mystery of my hand tremor and rapid heart rate I have been struggling with for almost 4 years. I’m on the right track and hopefully one day I won’t have to be on thyroid medication anymore. I am truly just grateful to have an answer. 

Even though some pretty awesome things happened in 2019, my family suffered the loss of my Grammy. The devastation the loss of a loved one can leave behind is something one can never predict. I know she is not in pain anymore, and I now see she is in a better place. This loss made me really value my family more than I have in the past. It made me learn to put down my phone and be more present when with my family. To savor moments. It made my cousins and I closer. When I am home, I make more of an effort now for family time.

Jumping into my blog, 2019 was a good year for the most part! I will say I did go through a rough patch with blogger that I chose not to be too vocal about (still debating whether or not to release that post I wrote). Regardless of the lack of engagement and the personal struggles, I got to meet over 3K more of you! That is how many new faces join my community! Like, AHH! I feel so lucky. To my new followers of 2019, I’m so happy to have you apart of Smile Darling! I can’t wait to see what 2020 brings us! To my OG followers, thank you for being here with me another year! Love you to pieces.

Every one of you has paved the path of Smile Darling, and you continue to do so! As I look back on 2019, I am so thankful for the opportunities presented to me and given to me because of YOU. That’s right! You make this dream of mine possible. Your support is what keeps this going.

I had some pretty awesome collaborations this year because of you. I worked with brands, I used to only dream about.

While the actual commission this year was lower than last year, I got so much more out of what we are doing and creating with Smile Darling! I will forever cherish the experiences over things. The experiences you have given me make me feel grateful and keep accountable. In 2020, I will be sure to carry this authenticity and transparency with me. After all, you keep me going.

The Victory Cup

Up, up, and away!

The Charleston Hot Air Balloon Festival and Polo Match was a blast. My favorite part was getting up close to the Hot Air Balloons. The event was perfect for people of all ages!

I had the opportunity to partner with The Victory Cup. In exchange for advertising this event, I got to attend and document my experience. The Victory Cup gave me 4 tickets for their VIP section to raffle off to my followers! I loved having the opportunity to gift this experience to my followers and meet them in real life!

So, what is The Victory Cup? The Victory Cups is literally considered “America’s Polo Match”. It is a National Polo Tournament with dozens of vendors. It has grown to be one of the largest equestrian events in the US. It is an all day affair full of polo, live music, fashion, Hot Air Balloons, and food & drinks.

My Experience

Our day started off bright and early, and by early I mean 8am. The balloons are weather permitting and only run in the early morning and early evening. The Hot Air Balloons were tethered and rides were available for purchase. They also had helicopter rides. We did not ride in the balloons, but I got to take some pretty awesome photos.

The event had an array of vendors! After we took photos, we walked around to browse. My guests and I had VIP tickets in the Golden Mallet PLUS Rosé All Day section. Our area didn’t open util 11am, so we had some time to kill.

During this time, something very traumatic happened to me. You guys, you can’t make this shit up. I was sitting at a table drink water, when all of a sudden it felt like my ankles were being bitten. I looked down, and my booties were COVERED in red ants! The ants were crawling down my ankles and inside my boots. I had to take them off, and people rushed over to help. It was pretty embarrassing, lol. The life I live.

After that incident, they let us into the VIP area early. It was a gorgeous day! Our area offered complimentary Rosé all day (or until it runs out), and lunch. Our lunch was really good and included burgers, hot dogs, oysters, and a lobster boil. I would be lying if I said I didn’t indulge in the Rosé.

I definitely want to be transparent and say getting VIP passes is honestly the most affordable way to go if you want food and drinks. The food and drinks that were sold by vendors were pretty pricey. You had to purchase tickets and each ticket is equivalent to $3. So, if you order fries that cost 3 tickets you’re really paying $6 (I’m a math wizard). I feel like people who brought kids definitely spent a pretty penny (lol why am I talking like that?).

The Golden Mallet section was a lot of fun! I networked and met so many people in my age group. I also got to hangout with my girls Shelley and Elyssa, who won my giveaway!

I watched some polo which was interesting. I never realized how competitive it was! It is pretty cool.

This was an event of a lifetime and I hope I have the privilege of going back next year!

You Glow Girl- Sand & Sky

Skincare. The one thing I just can’t get enough of!

Within the last three years, I have become obsessed with trying new skincare products. With 30 approach, chasing younger skin has become my new hobby.

A lot of it has been trial and error. But, I have found that I gravitate to products that make my skin not only feel hydrated, but glow!

When Sand & Sky wanted to collaborate, I knew I had hit the jackpot. I swear I am not even exaggerating. Just read their killer reviews to see for yourself!

Quick backstory: I studied abroad in Australia (Queensland to be exact) in 2012. Since then, I have been OBSESSED with all things Aussie. Their skincare is included!

Sand & Sky is a Female Founded company started by two Aussie gals named Emily and Sarah. They were on a mission to share clean and effective formulas with NO nasties.

“After living overseas for years, we had a simple goal – to share that Aussie magic with the world! Sand & Sky avoids crazy claims and indecipherable ingredients lists. Instead, we keep things simple with effective, clean and lovely-to-use Australian botanical products.”

Sand & Sky is literally from bush to bathroom! It is Cruelty Free, made with clean formulas, and packaged in recyclable material.

Over the last 3 weeks, I have had the pleasure of trying out their new line: Emu Apple.

Found deep in the outback, Australian Emu Apple pack a stronger antioxidant punch than most superfoods. The claim: It protects skin from aging free radicals, and boosts Vitamin C. Who wouldn’t want glowing skin that looks younger longer?!

The Review

I tried the Australian Emu Apple Super Bounce Mask (retails for $59.90 USD) and the Australian Emu Apple Dreamy Glow Drops (retails for $49.90 USD).

Off the bat, I can tell from the price this is a higher end skincare line. Do I love the price point? No. Is the product worth it? Keep reading to find out.

Australian Emu Apple Super Bounce Mask

This mask is 3.5 oz and comes with a cute mini brush for application. This mask claims it will deeply hydrate, brighten and make skin glow. It is enriched with Kakadu Plum, and the world’s richest Vitamin C. It also includes a blend of 5 types of Hyaluronic Acid.

This mask is hands down amazing. It is very jiggly lol, with a yogurt texture. This mask is PERFECT for hydration and glow! While I did not find it to help with blemishes, within minutes of taking off the mask my skin was glowing. Although it leaves my skin glowing, my skin is not left feeling oily.

With every use, I am given the same result. I used this product 1-2 times a week for three weeks. I’ve found that a little goes a long way, and I did not necessarily have to apply a thick layer.

If you cannot afford this product year round, I highly suggest it for the winter months! It improves skin texture and cancels out any dryness. You can also achieve the same glow with the right kind of serums though.

Would I buy this again: Maybe!

Would I recommend it: Yes!

Australian Emu Apple Dreamy Glow Drops

The bottle size for this serum is 1.0 oz. That is a standard size for this type of product. It claims to target deep with moisture, while leaving skin feeling smooth and glowing.

I can confidently say that out of the two products, this is my FAVORITE. Before I even jump in on my thoughts, I want to be transparent. I know this is pricey. It is honestly above the price point I would want to pay. They do offer after-pay though! It ends up being around $13 USD with 4 installments.

The product comes out of the dropper quickly, so do not squeeze too hard! This serum is more of a liquid, or thinner serum. The best way to describe this product is that it is a combination of a serum and face oil.

Although my face appears oily after immediately applying, it absorbs quickly. There is hardly any residue left. This product makes my skin glow like no other, and appear plumped. I prefer to use it at night, or if I am going bare faced during the day (aka no make-up).

Would I buy it again: Yes!

Do I recommend it: OMG YES!

A year ago, I opened up and shared one of my most personal posts to date (See Here). Writing it down made me relive that pain all over again. I felt it was time to get it off my chest to really move on and let it go. The overwhelming response from you left me speechless. Your stories that you shared with me privately are forever engraved in my mind. My heart broke to see that many women reaching out to me to share their experiences.

Your response made me realize there are so many more people than I could have imagined that have been through Domestic Violence. So many strong women who feel they need to stay silent.

I was one of those for a while. I felt so ashamed that I let it continue for as long as it did. I felt confused as to why this was happening to me, and why I still loved that human with every fiber of my being. I felt like people would think I was making it up to be dramatic, or for attention.

Once the physical bruises fade (if there are any at all), there is really nothing you can show as proof.

This platform I’ve created for myself has really empowered me. I hear my own voice now. I ignore the opinions of others a lot more than I would have. I wanted to find a way to help others, even if it was small. So, that is what I did. I told my story.

A year later, I am still so glad I did. I have zero regrets. I don’t care about any judgement. I feel like it helped me personally close that chapter of my life permanently. Even though the relationship had ended 9 years ago, it’s amazing what trauma can do. Yes, trauma. Domestic Violence will mentally fuck you up. Someone was mentally conditioning me to feel a certain way and believe certain things. He may have thought I’d forget all those times, but I remember.  

When I look at my reflection present day, I see a new person. I see thicker skin. I feel stronger than ever before. I’m taking back my life.

I needed to lose you to find me

Someone asked me last year if I was scared he would read my post. My answer is no. Everyone needs a reality check sometimes. I was very respectful not to use his name or personal info. I wrote my experience in a way that was as respectful to his family as I could have been. If he cares, I haven’t heard about it. Honestly, I don’t really care about offending him.

Recently, I learned some very alarming info. When I moved to Charleston, someone shared something with me that left me feeling paralyzed. I was told that South Carolina is among the nation’s deadliest places for women. This is due to the states failing efforts to stop domestic violence. The state came in #6 in the rate of women killed by men in the latest ranking from the Violence Policy Center. LIKE WHAT?! How can this be happening? The fact that this has been an on going problem for over a decade is so messed up. Why are there no efforts in trying to stop this?

After learning this, I reached out to My Sister’s House. My Sister’s House is a nonprofit Organization in Charleston, SC. They provide services, programs, and resources to empower domestic violence victims and their children to live free from abuse. They operate an emergency temporary shelter at an undisclosed location. They also have a 24 hour crisis line. I was going to collaborate with them this month, but it fell through. Next year, I hope to participate in their events.
